Special Courses in Communication and Media at Pwani University

A brilliant Start

A big kick-off event within the framework of the MCM project marked the beginning of the Special Courses in Communication and Media at Pwani University in September 2022. The MCM (Master in Communication and Media) project started in January 2022. It is a project from the University of Applied Sciences Karlsruhe (HKA) from Germany in cooperation with Pwani University Kilifi in Kenya, which is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Communication and Media at Pwani University

The still young discipline of communication and media, also known as technical communication, has experienced an enormous upswing in recent years and will continue to gain importance in the labour market in the coming years. In Kenya, the demand for qualified employees is also increasing, but so far there is no study programme that covers this field. Therefore, the MCM project aims to introduce a Master’s programme called Communication and Media at Pwani University Kilifi. The existing and very successful degree programme in Communication and Media Management at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences serves as a model. This makes Pwani University the first university in Kenya to offer a course in this future-oriented discipline.

Start of pilot courses with 12 students

The official start for the master’s in communication and Media is planned for the winter semester 2023. As a pilot project, a test round is currently running with so-called “Special Courses in Communication and Media”. The courses are attended by 12 Master’s students from different study programmes at Pwani University, such as Tourism Management and Hospitality, Business Management, English and Literature, Kiswahili, and IT. Just after the kick-off event, the courses started with a live lecture by Prof. Sissi Closs. Since the lecturers of the courses come mainly from Germany, Ireland and Switzerland, the majority of the courses take place virtually. For two semesters, a total of five test modules will now take place. With the additional skills they have learned, the students will stand out from their competitors in the future. At the same time, the experiences and feedback of the 12 pioneers will provide important insights for the start of the official Master’s courses next year.
