Masters in Communication and Media at Pwani University

Off to a great start!

Communication and Media Event Live on Campus at Pwani University

The official start for the Masters in Communication and Media is planned for the first semester of the academic year 2023/2024 starting in September.

About the Communication and Media Live Event

On March 2nd 2023, the project team hosted a big live event on campus at Pwani University, Kilifi. The main purpose was to inform prospective students, introduce the team, staff and programme and set a platform to get in touch and ask questions. As the Dean Prof. Dr. Halimu Shauri puts it, the event intended to “pass the single message of how important communication is. Not only communication as a programme – which we are about to kick off – but also communication as an interdisciplinary field.”

The agenda started with an official welcome by representatives of Pwani University, including Edith Miano, Prof. Yakobo Mutiti, Dr. Nancy Ngowa, Prof. Dr. Halimu Shauri and the Project Leader Prof. Sissi Closs from Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences. The introduction of the project team and participating universities was followed by an introduction of the new study programme as well as the occupational fields that can be entered with a degree in Communication and Media. Representatives of cooperating companies described career perspectives, the development of the discipline on the global labour market and the importance of this interdisciplinary field. The event was attended by more than 100 people, including representatives of Pwani University, the project team as well as more than 50 interested students.

The Masters Programme in Communication and Media at Pwani University

The discipline of Communication and Media, also known as Technical Communication, has experienced an enormous upswing in the recent years. The main goal is to understand user needs, create and manage information efficiently and design content in a user-friendly way. Those needs will continue to gain importance in the Kenyan labour market in the coming years. The demand for qualified personnel is also increasing and yet up to this point there is no study programme that covers this field. Pwani University is therefore taking on a pioneer role being the first university in Kenya to offer a degree programme in this future-oriented discipline.

The Masters in Communication and Media at Pwani University will be established within MCM, a project from the University of Applied Sciences Karlsruhe (HKA) in Germany in cooperation with Pwani University Kilifi in Kenya, funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Serving as a model for the study programme is the very successful degree programme in Communication and Media Management at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences.
