Course Information Architecture

What was your task?

Our task was to collect existing information on AI ethics from relevant authorities and establish clear definitions for; accountability, transparency, and explainability with examples. We organized these findings within a MadCap Flare documentation framework using topic-based structuring and linking to outline the specific ethics and AI knowledge that authorities, management, and staff need to gain in the MCM program to be market-ready.

Which MCM courses influenced the project?
Several core topics from the MCM curriculum directly guided our work, including:

  • Information Architecture Principles: We applied concepts, such as choices (minimalism), exemplars (labels with examples), front doors (contextual hooks), focused navigation, and growth, to structure an intuitive layout.
  • Project Management & Information Development Process: This provided the structural framework to plan, execute, and deliver technical documentation efficiently.
  • Research Methods & Rule-Based Writing: This assisted in data collection and writing consistent, standardized content.
  • Graphic Design, Word Styles, & Visualization: This enabled clear visual representation and layout design.
What are the benefits of how you implemented the project?
  • Agile execution: Implementing Scrum methodology with weekly online sprints kept progress on track.
  • Task division: Strategic task division allowed us to effectively bypass the lack of cloud computing features in Flare.
  • Scalable & focused Information Architecture: Designing with the principles of growth, choices, and focused navigation helped us to keep the interface minimalist, preventing choice fatigue and allowing future expansion.
  • Accessible entry points: Applying the principle of front doors ensured users landing on any sub-topic immediately find contextual hooks and links to guide their navigation.

What was your task?
Our task was to collect information on AI ethics from relevant academic institutions. Our main focus was on the three ethical principles of diversity, security, and trustworthiness. We also developed guidelines for the use of AI based on these three principles, considering both the students’ and teachers’ perspectives.
 
Which MCM courses influenced the project?
  • Visualization: This course helped in thinking about how content should be presented so that the pages are visually appealing and easy to engage with.
  • Information Architecture: This course helped in applying principles such as exemplars and the open-door principle. With thesewe were able to think about how users navigate to and through the website and how information should be organised to make it easy to navigate.

What are the benefits of how you implemented the project?

  • There were clear roles, as such responsibilities were well defined reducing duplication of work while improving coordination.
  • The Scrum method of work allowed for flexibility such that we were able to prioritise tasks based on readiness and capacity.
  • The whole method was efficient. It saved a lot of time, and improved workflow.

What was your task?

Our task was to research and collate information on AI ethics, with a primary focus on how AI-related ethical issues are addressed in practice. Our focus was on bias, fairness, and privacy, and we started by reviewing information from SAP, IBM and Rolex. The review involved collecting definitions of the different ethical terms, identifying relevant rules and guidelines, and finding good and bad examples of their application. The information was then structured into a clear, topic-based structure, and the final output was generated using MadCap Flare.

Which MCM courses influenced the project?
The main courses that influenced our project were Information Architecture, Topic-Based Structuring/Flare, and Visualization.

Information Architecture helped us understand how to organise and structure information logically, making it easier for information to be used for different purposes, reused in different purposes, and revised. Topic-based Structuring/Flare helped us break down the information into clear, focused and reusable topics and use appropriate links between related information.

Visualization also influenced how we presented the information, particularly through the use of colour selection and visual consistency. Selecting appropriate colours helped us distinguish different sections and concepts while ensuring that the overall presentation remained professional, clear and visually appealing.

What are the benefits of how you implemented the project?
Working using the Scrum approach helped us manage the project in a more organised and collaborative way. As a group of two, we were able to divide the work into smaller tasks, agree on what needed to be done, and work on the different sections within set timelines. This made it easier to track our progress and ensure that both of us contributed to the final project.

The regular discussions and reviews also allowed us to share ideas, identify gaps, give each other feedback and make improvements as we progressed, rather than waiting until the end of the project. This was particularly useful when reviewing the content, structuring the topics and deciding how the information should be presented.

The Scrum approach also gave us flexibility to make changes based on what we learnt during the project. Overall, it encouraged, continuous improvement and better time management, while helping us complete the project in a structured way.
