Masters in Communication and Media at Pwani University
MCM Live Event 2026:
AI and Technical Communication
Many can talk, but only a few can Communicate.
On the 20th of February, 2026, we hosted our annual MCM Live Event at Pwani University, bringing together students, professionals, and others interested in learning more about technical communication. The event provided attendees with an opportunity to explore the discipline and learn more about the MCM program offered at the university.
The event attracted a diverse audience, including professionals working in technical communication, representatives from partner organizations including KEMRI -Wellcome Trust and Write the Docs Kenya, members of the Pwani University administration including the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Rose Ruto-Korir, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research and Extension, Prof. Halimu Shauri, lecturers involved in the MCM program, as well as students and members of the public interested in understanding the field.
Organized annually, the MCM Live Event aims to provide insight into technical communication as a discipline while also highlighting our Master of Communication and Media program, the first master’s program in Technical Communication in Kenya. The event also serves as a platform for dialogue on emerging trends in the field and for connecting students with professionals and practitioners.
The day’s program included an introduction to the discipline of Technical Communication, giving attendees an overview of the field and its growing relevance across disciplines. This was followed by student project presentations, where continuing MCM students showcased the work they have been developing as part of their studies. The presentations highlighted how students are applying the practical skills gained through the program in various professional contexts and demonstrated the role of technical communication in making complex information clear and accessible.
One of the highlights of the event was a panel discussion on “AI and the Future of Technical Communication.” The panel brought together professionals from the field to reflect on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is shaping communication practices in both academia and the workplace. The panelists explored the opportunities and challenges presented by AI, including how professionals can effectively integrate AI tools into their work while maintaining ethical standards and critical judgment. The discussion also addressed the skills that communicators will need to strengthen in an AI-driven environment. It emphasized the importance of using AI as a supportive tool rather than relying on it uncritically.
In this context, the MCM program plays a key role by equipping students with the skills to confidently use AI tools while shaping responsible communication.
A particularly exciting highlight of the day was the announcement of Pwani University’s International Office, headed by Dr. Nancy Ngowa. For a program such as MCM, which was born out of international collaboration, this is a huge win and a step forward in strengthening partnerships, student exchanges, and collaborative research.
Through discussions, presentations, and networking opportunities, the annual MCM Live Event continues to play an important role in promoting the discipline of technical communication in Kenya while providing prospective students and professionals with valuable insight into the field and the opportunities offered through the Master of Communication and Media program at Pwani University.
