Empowering Communicators: Insights from the MCM LIVE EVENT
Many can talk, but only a few can Communicate.
On February 21, 2025 the MCM Live Event at Pwani University took place. The event aimed at raising awareness about the MCM program and its unique approach to technical communication. Over 150 interested students, staff members and industry experts attended to explore the career prospects in this growing field.
The whole event was moderated by our enthusiastic moderator Alexander Muthanga (Partnerships and Linkages Coordinator, Department of Languages, Linguistics and Literature and MCM team member). After welcome remarks from Pwani University management, the Project Leader Prof. Sissi Closs from University of Applied Sciences Karlsruhe continued with an introduction to the field of technical communication. Edith Miano (MCM Project Coordinator) continued with an overview of the curriculum, highlighting its interdisciplinary and international character. She pointed out the unique structure of the program, designed to equip the students with the necessary skills to succeed in the field of technical communication.
The first highlight was MCM students showcasing some of their project work, demonstrating how they learn by solving practical problems through hands-on projects. The audience was very impressed by how much the students had learned in just one semester and how broad and interdisciplinary the project results were.
Another highlight was an insightful discussion panel with industry experts. The panel included Mercy Ruto (MCM Pilot Program alumna and MCM tutor), Dr. Elizabeth Munyaya (Director of the Board of Undergraduate Studies), Grace Dhahabu (Tutorial Fellow & expert in Corporate Communication), Prof. Silas Oriaso (Head of Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Nairobi), Farid Kipirash (CEO of Butterfly Tech Solutions) and Kevin Tuei (Write the Docs Kenya).
The panelists discussed the growing role of technical communication in our modern world and highlighted the increasing demand for qualified professionals in this field. They concluded that it is time for such a program because there is an urgent need for experts in this field within the industry, yet there have been too few opportunities for further education until now.
Hillary Nyakundi from Write the Docs Kenya delivered a keynote on the state of technical communication in Kenya and offered valuable insights into the discipline’s current state. Write the Docs is a global community of people who are interested in the field of technical communication.
They offer the opportunity to build a network with like-minded people and engage in conferences and discussions on new developments in the field of technical communication.
The event concluded with a hands-on Graphic Design workshop using Figma, led by Olivia Brix and Lukas Keysell. This interactive workshop allowed interested students to dive into practical skills related to MCM, giving them a taste of what they can expect from the MCM program.
Overall, the event was a great success, providing a wealth of information about the field of technical communication, the MCM program, and career prospects available for graduates. Besides that, it offered a unique networking opportunity for students, allowing them to connect with industry experts.
