Masters in Communication and Media at Pwani University

Start of the official Masters Programme in Communication and Media

After a successful pilot project, the official Masters Programme will start in September 2023.

The pilot in Communication and Media was a huge success

A two-semester pilot project, called Special Courses in Communication and Media, was running from September 2022 until March 2023. These courses showed an outline of modules and content the Masters Programme will provide. Five basics modules of the degree programme were taught by various lecturers from international universities such as Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences and Limerick University. 12 master students, who were pursuing various study programmes at Pwani University, such as Tourism Management and Hospitality, Business Management, English and Literature, Kiswahili and IT, participated in the pilot.

The Special Courses finished with a final event on March 27th 2023. Students and Lecturers as well as the Project Team got together virtually to wrap up the brilliant pilot and give a perspective on the next steps for the upcoming Masters Programme in Communication and Media, starting in September. The attending students will stand out from their competitors in the future according to the skills they have learned just through participating in the Special Courses. Additionally, the experience and feedback of the 12 pioneers will provide important insights for the start of the official Masters Programme next year.

The Masters Programme in Communication and Media at Pwani University

The discipline of Communication and Media, also known as Technical Communication, has experienced an enormous upswing in the recent years. The main goal is to understand user needs, create and manage information efficiently and design content in a user-friendly way. Those needs will continue to gain importance in the Kenyan labour market in the coming years. The demand for qualified personnel is also increasing and yet up to this point there is no study programme that covers this field. Pwani University is therefore taking on a pioneer role being the first university in Kenya to offer a degree programme in this future-oriented discipline.

The Masters in Communication and Media at Pwani University will be established within MCM, a project from the University of Applied Sciences Karlsruhe (HKA) in Germany in cooperation with Pwani University Kilifi in Kenya, funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Serving as a model for the study programme is the very successful degree programme in Communication and Media Management at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences.

The official start for the Masters in Communication and Media is planned for the first semester of the academic year 2023/2024 starting in September.
